Centre escapes with 4-3 win over Rhodes

9/25/2007 11:42:10 AM

An own goal and a penalty kick proved too much for the men's soccer team to overcome as they dropped a 4-3 decision to SCAC rival Centre College on Sunday. The Lynx struck first in the 16th minute when Sr. Chase Lafont set up Jr. Patrick Deveau's first goal of the season. 5 minutes later, the Lynx were picking the ball out of their own goal when a Rhodes player mis-hit his clearance and sent it into the side netting.  In the 32 minute the Lynx conceded their 2nd penalty kick of the weekend and Centre went into the half 2-1 leaders.  Centre came out strong after the half sending everything forward and were able to score on 2 breakaways to go up 4-1.  Rhodes settled into the game and fought back to 4-3 after  So. Logan Eberly scored twice, both set up by Lafont. Rhodes had several chances to tie the game late, most notably Eberly's attempt at the hat trick that the Centre keeper stopped with 10 minutes to play and 2 dangerous crosses by So. Eric Devore's that couldn't be finished in front of the Centre goal. "We immediately recognized that their ranking (#23) meant nothing and  that we could play with them, but  we can't expect to win when we give goals away (own goal and PK)" said Coach Marcinko.  " We also knew they would come out after the half and just send balls forward but they were still able to get through. I am very pleased that we fought back and put ourselves in a position to tie the game at the end but we have to focus for 90 full minutes not just 20-25 minute blocks." "On the bright side, we are getting good game experience against good teams and we are learning from our errors which will make us better down the road." Rhodes outshot Centre 14-11, 9-8 on goal. Next up for the Lynx will be home matches against Sewanee on Friday at 2:00pm and Oglethorpe on Sunday at 2:00pm.
